A few listeners have me bummed

Terri Hemmert played this record for our "Hear First" segment a few weeks ago and we received several e-mails from people that didn't like the record and wanted us to stop playing it. Good move, guys! Way to encourage safe, ball-less radio! Hey, if we play something that's a little too much for you, or a bit off your radar, hit the button and turn on another station that's playing "White Wedding" for the 145,935,497th time and then come back when it's over. We appreciate your feedback, we honestly do, but when you act like you're scared of monsters, and tell us to STOP PLAYING records you don't like, especially newer, more adventurous stuff, all you're doing is encouraging us to take fewer risks. And I DO know that 98% of the audience did enjoy the record, or at least liked the fact that they were hearing a band as cool as Portishead, it's just a few squeaky wheels (squeaky for all the wrong reasons), that can bring something new and different down.

Sorry, Beth.

Is that rare? I would think that you'd always get a poor response from people who don't like stuff outside of the mainstream. But then, I guess those folks usually go listen to The Mix instead :)

I kind of like the song. Although to be honest, I don't know what I'd think upon first listen if I didn't see the video along with it...

MINISTER: As I was saying Alex, you can be instrumental in changing the public verdict. Do you understand, Alex? Have I made myself clear?

ALEX: As an unmuddied lake Fred. As clear as an azure sky of deepest summer. You can rely on me, Fred.

"A Clockwork Orange"
Anthony Burgess/film Stanley Kubrick

We shall replace "Alex" with "Jason Thomas".

Yes. And Jason will play new music, and not simply the tried and true. Do you really want to hear "Wheel in the Sky Keeps on Turning" 1,399,706,455 times? Maybe you do, but, there just may be a new song out there that will turn you on too.

So! Jason T! Fight the Good Fight.

O.K. Perhaps not ALL the music, but he shall play the

The final unfinished sentence of "my Blog" - I don't know how it got there. I disclaim it.

Not my BLOG.

Or I could revise: Jason will not play ALL THE MUSIC but he shall play what is new and likely worthwhile - only time will prove what is timeless.

Clear as an unmuddied lake, yes?

Wow. I'm actually pretty shocked. Granted "Machine Gun" seems a ways more industrial than your other selections, but the WXRT audience in my head doesn't seem like a group that would actually write to get something off the air.

Takes all kinds, I suppose...

On a slightly different note, it's cool that you guys are playing Portishead on the radio and all, but if you could get them to cross the pond for a show in Chicago that would be awesome.

I don't believe 'XRT should play music without discernment, and you ('XRT folks) do not. Thank you. I do not want to hear Madonna At All. And many other "artists" who are not musicians.

I do think 'XRT should play new music that is promising or inventive, or radical artists now and then. It requires a bit of time to know what will last and what will fall by the wayside.

I think that some worthy music, let's say. . . Kraftwerk or Dispatch (Kraftwerk appears on Jason Thomas's Bonnaroo blog) should have fair "play".

I think WXRT does the best job in this city embracing rock/blues and actively promoting such artists. Let's keep thinking progressive rock. And The Blues. The roots of it all.

There are always going to be people who don't like what you do and feel like being vocal. Don't let people like that get you down.

I _like_ driving home and not having to listen to the same Top 40 songs day after day. I _like_ the fact that you play Kinks B-sides and the Smiths and the first new Portishead in, what, 10 years. (Ten years?!?)

Keep it coming Jason!! Don't let a handful of naysayers destroy the diversity that makes WXRT a great station.

OK, "Wheel in the Sky" is a good song, and employed very effectively at the closing of one of "The Sopranos" episodes. "The Sopranos" music editor is quite excellent.

Let me think again:

Do you really want to hear. . . say, "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor, . . . XRT wouldn't play that (maybe during a Sat morn flashback?). Still, if they did, you would not want to hear it 2,734,857,903 times, though it is a good folkie pop song. You've already heard it 2,734,857,903 times.
