Another candidate for fav movie of the year?!?!

Oh yeah, that's right, summer is ending, fall is around the corner... And that means that there's gonna be way too much cool stuff to keep up with. The summer is dead (except for street festivals and other free events here in Chicago) and now fall is coming. If you're a TV/music/movie geek, you have a new football season, Academy Award hopefuls released, Chicago Int'l Film Festival, a new TV season, a bunch of new albums, and shows at actual clubs here in Chicago again! As cool as they are, Lolla and Pitchfork kinda bleed the scene dry for months, but now shows at our local venues will be back, on top of all that other stuff listed. Here's a movie to get you started on the busy season ahead..

I recently heard a special on NPR discussing the making of the movie and the event itself. The "walker" guy is crazy but cool.

Looks interesting. I plan on seeing it if it ever makes it out to the sticks.

(Quite ingenious how they get the cable over to the other tower.)

With great anticipation, I went to the always wonderful Music Box Theatre to see the film "Patti Smith: Dream of Life". Patti Smith, hard woman rocker, beautiful and unbeautiful, a woman who lost both her brother and husband, and the mother of two children. She has fascinated me since art school.

I walked out of the theatre 50 minutes into the 2 hour plus movie. I couldn't watch it.

Though some of the archival footage was lovely, I now think of Patti as self-absorbed, self-important, self everything: the movie was incredibly self-conscious. The work of a film student. Complete with nice respectable always cool Helvetica titles.

Patti, you've a good voice and lots of passion. And?

I don't know. Sometimes Hollywood does get it right, and the Indi films are blatantly self-indulgent.

I couldn't help thinking that in this time of Iraq/Afghanistan and crisis' of debt, health care, environmental destruction and a thousand other things gone awry - I could not watch Patti sit in the corner of her apartment, take a picture with her polaroid, and, as she said "do nothing". Perhaps you have to see the movie to understand.

Not my candidate for fav movie of the year. I should have gone to see L.A. Confidential, playing 11:30 am this morning. That was a good movie.

This has nothing to do with movies.

I think I'll open another e-mail account and my screen name will be

Area Woman

Do you know that Ben Stiller is manic/depressive?

a gold and silver blessing and a bit of a curse.

What is a Blog?

Anything anyone thinks is worth sending into the ether of the internet.

Manic depression is a blessing when one is manic, a curse when on is not.

Patti Smith was given probably a thousand hours of film and a forum of sorts. I believe she could have made better use of film and notoriety. Simply in the telling of a life.

And this is a blog, no more, no less.
